Basketball

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, typically consisting of five players each, compete to score points by throwing a ball through the opposing team’s hoop or net. The game is played on a rectangular court with a goal at each end, elevated to a height of 10 feet (3.05 meters). Points are scored by shooting the ball into the opponent’s basket, with various point values assigned depending on the location of the shot (e.g., two points for a field goal and three points for a shot made beyond a designated three-point line). Basketball emphasizes skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and defensive play, and requires teamwork and strategy. The game is governed by a set of rules that dictate gameplay, fouls, player conduct, and scoring. Basketball originated in the late 19th century and has grown to become one of the most popular sports worldwide, both in terms of participation and viewership. It is played at various levels including professional, collegiate, and amateur leagues, and is a key component of international sports competitions like the Olympics.
